Chemical, Effluent and Process-Liquid Flexible Tanks
Create temporary process capacity around the liquid—not around a one-material catalog tank.
Product Positioning Chemical and effluent bladders hold process water, brine, fertilizer solution, wastewater, drilling fluids, wash water and selected chemicals during maintenance, treatment, shutdowns or remote operations. The design starts with a complete liquid data sheet and exposure profile. |
1. Why This Product Exists
The commercial case is created by a mismatch between permanent infrastructure and a temporary, mobile or geometry-specific duty. A well-designed flexible product moves the expensive volume out of freight and storage: the chamber travels folded, then becomes useful only after it is filled with air, gas, water, fuel, process liquid or dry bulk material at the operating site.
· Plant shutdowns need temporary storage faster than rigid-tank rental can arrive.
· Generic PVC can fail through swelling, extraction or plasticizer loss.
· Waste streams vary in pH, solvents, salts, temperature and suspended solids.
· Residues and crystallization can block valves and damage folds.
· The liability of mixing unknown chemicals in reused tanks is high.
For procurement, the practical comparison is therefore not only unit price. Buyers should compare packed volume, deployment labor, fill/inflation equipment, setup time, accessory completeness, inspection burden, repair route, expected cycles and the cost of a failure in the intended environment.
2. Product Forms and System Architecture
Closed pillow tanks, open-top framed tanks, self-erecting tanks and custom baffled vessels can be fitted with drains, vents, mixer sleeves, recirculation ports, sample points, level indication and secondary containment. Abrasion liners or sacrificial internal sleeves may be used for solids-bearing liquids.
What the flexible chamber does Creates containment, force, load, separation or a protected interface with very low empty transport volume. | What the surrounding system must do Provide support, restraint, control, transfer connections, instrumentation, secondary protection and a safe operating procedure. |
3. Materials and Engineering Characteristics
PVC, TPU, nitrile, EPDM, neoprene, butyl and specialty fluoropolymer-faced laminates cover different compatibility windows. Selection needs concentration, temperature, exposure time, cleaning chemistry and permeation criteria—not only a chemical name.
Hydrostatic load and chemical weakening act together. Hot liquid can reduce coating strength and seam margin; vacuum during pumping can collapse a closed bag; gas evolution requires venting. The foundation must support full liquid weight and protect the underside.
A professional material specification normally separates the load-bearing reinforcement from the fluid- or gas-contact coating. Relevant properties may include tensile and tear strength, coating adhesion, seam efficiency, flex fatigue, puncture and abrasion resistance, permeability, extraction, chemical swelling, UV/weathering, cold-crack behavior, conductivity, flame performance and cleanability. The correct list depends on the duty; publishing one generic fabric weight as proof of quality is not sufficient.
4. Pressure, Hydrostatic Head and Load Logic
Three different numbers should never be confused: raw-material burst data, finished-product proof/test pressure, and permitted working pressure or load. Flexible tanks may be nearly unpressurized yet carry enormous hydrostatic force. Lifting bags may have a high internal pressure while effective force changes throughout the stroke. Load-test bags depend on measured water mass and rigging—not a marketing volume. Final ratings must come from the complete geometry, seams, fittings, restraint and validated operating envelope.
5. Manufacturing and Quality-Control Route
Welding or vulcanization parameters are qualified to the selected coating. Ports receive chemically compatible gaskets and backing plates. Prototype immersion, seam-peel, leak, cyclic fold and cleanability trials may be needed before production.
· Incoming material identity and batch traceability.
· Qualified welding, vulcanizing, bonding or sewing parameters with retained process records.
· Seam coupons or witness samples where practical.
· Fitting alignment, pull-out/load-spreading and leak-path inspection.
· Finished-product leak, pressure, hydrostatic, dimensional or functional testing matched to the duty.
· Serial or batch marking, instruction labels, repair kit and inspection documentation for professional products.
6. Representative Product and Value Parameters
Reference concept | Capacity / size | Pressure or load logic | Medium / duty | Typical deployment |
CL-2 Service Bag | 2 m³ | Wash water / compatible mild solution | Closed pillow | Maintenance task |
CL-25 Process Tank | 25 m³ | Brine, wastewater or fertilizer solution | Heavy-duty bladder | Temporary process buffer |
CL-X Engineered | 5-200 m³ | Defined chemical and temperature | Custom laminate and fittings | Plant shutdown / remediation |
Parameter-use note. The concepts above are website planning windows, not certified ratings. Final dimensions, pressure, capacity, working load, temperature and service life require a confirmed medium, duty cycle, site and validation route.
7. Installation and Operating Forms
Supply can range from a bare replacement chamber to a mission-ready kit. Common packages include protective groundsheet, outer cover, frame or cradle, restraint webbing, manifolds, valves, gauges, controllers, pumps/blowers, hoses, load cells, containment berm, repair materials, storage crate and inspection checklist. For recurring fleet use, accessory standardization and color/serial coding often create more customer value than minor fabric-cost savings.
8. Representative Application Cases
Application | Operating need | Value created |
Heat-exchanger cleaning | A temporary tank collects cleaning solution and rinse water during service. | Lower transport cube, faster temporary capacity, adaptable interfaces and a documented route to inspection/repair. |
Wastewater bypass | A bladder bank provides buffer capacity while a basin or line is repaired. | Lower transport cube, faster temporary capacity, adaptable interfaces and a documented route to inspection/repair. |
Agricultural chemical logistics | A compatible tank stores liquid fertilizer seasonally. | Lower transport cube, faster temporary capacity, adaptable interfaces and a documented route to inspection/repair. |
Mining and drilling support | Flexible tanks handle brine or process water at remote pads. | Lower transport cube, faster temporary capacity, adaptable interfaces and a documented route to inspection/repair. |
9. Target Customers and Purchase Triggers
Primary customer profiles include industrial maintenance contractors, chemical plants, wastewater companies, mining firms, agricultural suppliers, environmental-remediation teams and equipment integrators. Typical purchase triggers are a temporary project, seasonal capacity, difficult site access, emergency-readiness stock, repeated rental use, a new OEM platform, a regulatory inspection, or the need to replace trucked steel/concrete test or storage equipment.
A strong RFQ identifies the contained medium or load, usable capacity, pressure/backpressure, dimensions and available footprint, operating temperature, chemical composition, environmental exposure, support surface, deployment frequency, inflation/fill source, fittings, accessories, target standards, delivery country and quantity. For lifting, sealing, gas, fuel, aviation or life-safety work, the consequence of failure and required approval route must also be stated.
10. Standards, Verification and Claim Boundaries
Reference area | How it should be used on the website |
Chemical supplier SDS and compatibility data as mandatory design inputs | Describe the likely design or approval pathway; do not claim compliance until a named model has documentary evidence. |
ASTM D751 and agreed immersion/aging methods | Describe the likely design or approval pathway; do not claim compliance until a named model has documentary evidence. |
Local environmental and hazardous-liquid containment rules | Describe the likely design or approval pathway; do not claim compliance until a named model has documentary evidence. |
Site-specific engineering and waste-classification requirements | Describe the likely design or approval pathway; do not claim compliance until a named model has documentary evidence. |
Product Boundary No “universal chemical tank” claim is acceptable. Unknown mixtures, oxidizers, solvents, hot liquids, hazardous waste and food-contact service require specific approval. Do not use the same tank for incompatible products or assume a membrane compatibility chart validates seams, fittings and long-term storage. | |
11. Factory Validation Checklist
· Confirm actual medium, concentration, temperature and exposure duration.
· Review geometry, support, restraint, fittings and all load cases.

12. Suggested Website FAQ
What liquid information is required? Full composition, concentration, pH, temperature, solids, exposure duration, cleaning method and hazard classification.
Can a tank include a mixer? Sometimes, but mixer loads and abrasion generally require an external frame or specially reinforced interface.
Can hot liquid be stored? Only within the validated temperature limit; heat affects coating, reinforcement, seams and vapour pressure.
How is sludge drained? Large low-point ports, sloped support, flushing points and short fill cycles help, but highly viscous sludge may need an open-top or dewatering product.
Can the bladder be reused? Yes when the liquid, cleaning and inspection plan allow it; some hazardous or contaminating uses should be dedicated-service only.
